Terry Satsuki Milhaupt, Board member of the Japanese Art Society of America and highly respected independent scholar, passed away just before Thanksgiving 2012 following a brief illness. Terry had served on the Board for several years and impressed everyone with her scholarship, enthusiasm and perceptive observations. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and all who mourn her passing.
Terry lectured at museums and universities in Japan and the United States on the arts and designs of Japan. She was the author of “Facets of the Kimono: Reflections of Japan’s Modernity” in the 2006 publication Arts of Japan: The John C. Weber Collection; “Second Hand Silk Kimono Migrating Across Borders,” in Old Clothes, New Looks: Second Hand Fashion (2005); and “Tsujigahana Textiles and their Fabrication,” in Turning Point: Oribe and the Arts of Sixteenth Century Japan (2003). She contributed articles to Orientations and the Yale University Gallery of Art Bulletin. She was twice awarded the Jane and Morgan Whitney Research Fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2007, she guest curated “Contemporary Netsuke: Masterful Miniatures” for the Museum of Arts & Design, and she was also a Visiting Professor at the Bard Graduate Center. At the time of her death she was completing her book on the history of modern kimono.
